Just days after presidential primaries in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, California, Texas, New Mexico and New York, the nation will be buzzing about Election '08 and Donna Brazile, a veteran Democratic political strategist, will visit McKendree. Brazile, a senior fellow at the University of Maryland’s Academy of Leadership, was recently appointed national chair of the Voting Rights Institute, the Democratic Party’s major initiative to promote and protect the right to vote. Brazile served as the Campaign Manager for Gore-Lieberman 2000, making her the first African American woman ever to manage a major presidential campaign. *Tickets for The George E. McCammon Memorial Distinguished Speaker Series must be picked up at Will Call at The Hett Box Office. The box office will open 90 minutes prior to all Distinguished Speaker Series events. (618) 235-2700, ext 5607 or 5426Darwin Day is a worldwide celebration of science, humanity, and the intellectual contributions of Charles Darwin, the noted English naturalist who was a pioneer in the science of evolutionary biology. A variety of activities are planned at SWIC to celebrate the 199th anniversary of Darwin’s birth. “The Darwin Day celebration is an important part of our Biology department’s efforts to educate the college community about the importance of evolution to science and society,” said Associate Professor of Biology Bob Weck. There will be a display of Darwin-related and evolution-related material in the SWIC Belleville Campus Library and birthday cake will be served outside the Theatre starting at 10 a.m. Lectures, that are free and open to the public, will be held in the theatre:
· 11 a.m.: “Threatened and Endangered Species in Southwestern Illinois,” by Debbie Newman, Illinois Nature Preserves Commission
· Noon: “Biodiversity of Illinois Mammals,” by Joyce Hofmann, who holds a doctorate in Zoology, Illinois Natural History Survey
· 1 p.m.: “Darwinian Medicine and the Evolution of the Domestic Cat,” by Dennis Lawler, DVM

Belleville FMS Support Group, a community education program and support group for those suffering from fibromyalgia syndrome will be held in Memorial Hospital’s auditorium on Tuesday, February 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. People are also encouraged to bring family members to participate in the group. This months meeting will be a “Share and Care” meeting, where participants will be asked to share their experiences and stories. Fibromyalgia is a widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder for which the cause is still unknown. The disorder is often referred to as an “invisible” illness because there are little or no outward indications that there is an illness or of its resulting disabilities. More than 75 colleges and universities will participate in the 20th Annual Metro East Baccalaureate College Fair held at Southwestern Illinois College. In addition to visiting with college representatives, students and parents can attend two free workshops presented by Roger Knox, SWIC Financial Aid adviser. The workshops will begin at 1 and 2 p.m. The first workshop, “How to Find Money for College,” includes information on grants, loans, scholarships and student employment. The second workshop will assist students in completing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Families attending this workshop will need to bring both parent’s and student’s 2007 tax information. Individuals will be able to file online in the computer lab. Colleges attending the fair include Bradley University, Eastern Illinois University, Greenville College, Illinois State University, McKendree University, Millikin University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Southwestern Illinois College, University of Illinois at Springfield, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Western Illinois University, Fontbonne University, Lindenwood University, Saint Louis University, St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Truman State University, University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Missouri-St. Louis, Michigan State University, Creighton University, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy and University of Southern Indiana, among others. The College Fair is sponsored in conjunction with the Illinois Association for College Admissions Counselors and is part of the statewide Illinois College Exposition Program.
